नमस्कार ठाणेकर!

मी ठाणे मध्यवर्ती कारागृह. होय, आज तुम्ही मला याच नावाने ओळखता. रोज हजारो लोक माझ्या दगडी तटबंदीवरून नजर फिरवत आपल्या कामाला जातात. काहींच्या मनात माझ्याबद्दल भीती असते, तर काहींच्या मनात कुतूहल. पण तुम्हाला माहीत आहे का? मी जन्माने कारागृह नव्हतो. माझ्या अंगाखांद्यावर जो हा काळा दगड दिसतोय ना, तो एका 'किल्ल्याचा' आहे. मी केवळ गुन्हेगारांना डांबून ठेवणारी जागा नाही, तर मी भारतीय स्वातंत्र्यलढ्यातील एक 'जिवंत स्मारक' आहे. चला, आज मी तुम्हाला माझी खरी कहाणी सांगतो.

====माझा जन्म: एक अभेद्य किल्ला (इ.स. १७३०)====

माझा जन्म झाला तोच मुळात संरक्षणासाठी. १७३० च्या सुमारास पोर्तुगीजांनी मला बांधायला सुरुवात केली. तेव्हा [[ठाणे शहर|ठाणे]] हे एक महत्त्वाचे बंदर होते आणि खाडीवर नजर ठेवण्यासाठी माझी निर्मिती झाली. तेव्हा मला 'फोर्ट ऑफ ठाना' (Fort of Tana) किंवा 'काकबे दे तानी' म्हणून ओळखले जायचे. माझ्या उजव्या बाजूला अथांग खाडी आणि तीन बाजूंना भक्कम तटबंदी, असा मी दिमाखात उभा होतो.

====भगव्याचा साक्षीदार (इ.स. १७३७)====

माझ्या आयुष्यातील तो सर्वात अभिमानाचा क्षण होता, जेव्हा श्रीमंत चिमाजी आप्पांनी वसई मोहिमेदरम्यान माझ्यावर हल्ला चढवला. मराठ्यांच्या तलवारींची आणि तोफांची ताकद मी अनुभवली आहे. १७३७ मध्ये मराठ्यांनी पोर्तुगीजांचा पराभव करून माझ्यावर स्वराज्याचा भगवा झेंडा फडकवला. तो दिवस आजही माझ्या स्मरणात लख्ख आहे. पेशव्यांच्या काळात मी स्वराज्याचा एक महत्त्वाचा पहारेकरी होतो.

====तुरुंगवासाची सुरुवात (इ.स. १८३८)====

काळाचे चक्र फिरले आणि इंग्रज आले. त्यांनी मराठ्यांचा पराभव केला आणि माझ्यावर कब्जा मिळवला. १८३८ साली ब्रिटीश राजवटीत माझे रूप पालटले. त्यांनी माझ्या बुरुजांचे आणि खोल्यांचे रूपांतर तुरुंगात केले. 'ठाणे किल्ला' आता 'ठाणे जेल' झाला होता. भारतातील सर्वात जुन्या कारागृहांपैकी मी एक आहे.

====स्वातंत्र्यलढ्यातील आहुती आणि माझा थरकाप====

माझा इतिहास फक्त दगडांचा नाही, तर रक्ताचा आणि त्यागाचा आहे. भारतीय स्वातंत्र्यलढ्यातील अनेक क्रांतीकारकांचा वास माझ्या कुशीत झाला आहे.

पण एक रात्र... होय, ती १९ एप्रिल १९१० ची रात्र मी कधीच विसरू शकत नाही. नाशिकचे कलेक्टर जॅक्सन यांच्या वधाच्या खटल्यात तीन तरुण क्रांतीकारकांना माझ्याच आवारात फाशी देण्यात आली.

१. अनंत कान्हेरे (वय अवघे १९ वर्षे)
२. कृष्णाजी कर्वे (वय २३ वर्षे)
३. विनायक देशपांडे (वय २१ वर्षे)

जेव्हा या वीरांनी हसत हसत फाशीचा दोर गळ्यात घातला, तेव्हा माझ्या दगडी भिंतीही आतल्या आत रडल्या होत्या. आद्य क्रांतीकारक वासुदेव बळवंत फडके यांनाही काही काळ माझ्याच कोठडीत ठेवले होते. स्वातंत्र्यवीर सावरकरांचे बंधू बाबाराव सावरकर आणि खुद्द विनायक दामोदर सावरकर यांच्या पदस्पर्शाने माझी भूमी पावन झाली आहे. मी सावरकरांच्या रत्नागिरीतील स्थानबद्धतेपूर्वीचा काही काळ पाहिला आहे.

====आजचा मी: सुधारणागृह====

स्वातंत्र्य मिळाले आणि माझेही स्वरूप बदलले. आज मी फक्त शिक्षा देण्याचे ठिकाण नाही, तर 'सुधारणागृह' आहे. माझ्या आत येणारा कैदी, बाहेर जाताना एक चांगला माणूस बनून जावा, यासाठी मी प्रयत्न करतो. माझ्या आवारात आज सुतारकाम चालते, हातमाग चालतात, शेती केली जाते आणि हो, माझ्या बेकरीतील पाव आणि बिस्किटे संपूर्ण ठाण्यात प्रसिद्ध आहेत. माझ्या भिंतींनी गुन्हे पाहिलेत, पण आता त्याच भिंती पश्चात्ताप आणि बदलाचे साक्षीदार होत आहेत.

====ठाणेकरांना आवाहन====

आज मी १८५ वर्षांहून अधिक काळ इथे उभा आहे. ठाणे शहराचा विकास, मेट्रोची कामे, उड्डाणपूल हे सगळे बदल मी शांतपणे पाहत आहे. माझी विनंती एवढीच आहे की, माझ्याकडे बघताना केवळ 'जेल' म्हणून बघू नका. माझ्या प्रत्येक दगडात इतिहासाची स्पंदने आहेत. मी क्रांतीकारकांचे बलिदान पाहिले आहे, मी मराठ्यांचा पराक्रम पाहिला आहे.

मी ठाण्याचा अभिमान आहे, मी ठाणे किल्ला आहे, मीच ठाणे मध्यवर्ती कारागृह आहे!

<big>I am Thane Central Jail. Yes, this is the name you know me by today. Every day, thousands of people glance at my stone fortifications as they go about their work. Some look at me with fear, others with curiosity. But do you know? I was not born a prison. The black stone you see on my body belongs to a 'Fort'. I am not merely a place to confine criminals; I am a 'living monument' of the Indian freedom struggle. Come, today let me tell you my true story.</big>

<b><big>My Birth: An Impregnable Fort (1730 AD)</big></b>

<big>I was born primarily for protection. Around 1730, the Portuguese began constructing me. At that time, Thane was an important port, and I was created to keep a watch over the creek. Back then, I was known as the 'Fort of Tana' or 'Cacabe de Tana'. With the vast creek on my right and strong fortifications on three sides, I stood tall with pride.</big>

<b><big>Witness to the Saffron Flag (1737 AD)</big></b>

<big>The proudest moment of my life was when Shrimant Chimaji Appa attacked me during the Vasai campaign. I have experienced the might of Maratha swords and cannons. In 1737, the Marathas defeated the Portuguese and hoisted the Saffron flag of Swarajya (Self-rule) upon me. That day is still etched clearly in my memory. During the Peshwa era, I was a crucial guardian of Swarajya.</big>

<b><big>The Beginning of Imprisonment (1838 AD)</big></b>

<big>The wheel of time turned, and the British arrived. They defeated the Marathas and captured me. In 1838, under British rule, my form changed. They converted my bastions and rooms into a prison. 'Thane Fort' had now become 'Thane Jail'. I am one of the oldest prisons in India.</big>

<big><b>Sacrifices in the Freedom Struggle and My Tremor</b>

My history is not just of stones, but of blood and sacrifice. Many revolutionaries of the Indian freedom struggle resided in my lap.

But one night... yes, the night of 19 April 1910, I can never forget. In the Jackson murder case of Nashik, three young revolutionaries were hanged within my premises:

Anant Kanhere (Age merely 19 years)

Krishnaji Karve (Age 23 years)

Vinayak Deshpande (Age 21 years)

When these heroes put the hangman's noose around their necks with a smile, even my stone walls wept silently. The first revolutionary, Vasudev Balwant Phadke, was also kept in my cell for some time. My soil has been sanctified by the footsteps of Swatantryaveer Savarkar's brother, Babarao Savarkar, and Vinayak Damodar Savarkar himself. I have witnessed the time before Savarkar's confinement in Ratnagiri.</big>

<b><big>Today's Me: A Reformatory</big></b>

<big>Freedom was won, and my nature changed too. Today, I am not just a place for punishment, but a 'Reformatory'. I strive to ensure that a prisoner who enters my walls leaves as a better human being. Today, carpentry and handloom work is carried out in my premises, farming is done, and yes, the bread and biscuits from my bakery are famous all over Thane. My walls have seen crimes, but now those same walls are witnessing repentance and change.

<b>An Appeal to Thanekars</b></big>

<big>I have been standing here for over 185 years today. I am silently watching the development of Thane city, the metro works, the flyovers—all these changes. My only request is that when you look at me, do not see me just as a 'Jail'. Every stone of mine holds the vibrations of history. I have seen the sacrifice of revolutionaries; I have seen the valor of the Marathas.

I am the pride of Thane, I am the Thane Fort, I am the Thane Central Jail!
